Introducing Brian Astell

Brian Astell, DOB: 03/18/1981

Born in El Salvador and adopted to the US at one month old, my career in athletics began with 3 years of soccer in high school and a year of cross country running. I went to UNC Charlotte on a track and XC scholarship but after a semester I left to give my full dedication to mountain bike racing. I turned pro in 2000, racing the nationals and local events on the East Coast. In 2004 I moved to Gualala, CA and in 2005 I made the transition over to Xterra triathlon racing, which is now my main focus. I have a full season of nation-wide Xterra races planned for 2008 and will be racing NORBA nationals in addition to local mountain and cyclocross events between and after the Xterra season. For me, racing is more than just trying to cross the finish line first. The promotion of health, fitness and the furthering of the sport through encouragement of amateur racers and enthusiasts go hand in hand with the fulfillment of racing and doing well.
